BOOK REVIEW: The Adventures of Nihu by Omoruyi Uwuigiaren

I believe it was Stephen King who said something about writers holding the power of creating worlds in their hands.  The Adventures of Nihu  provides quintessential proof of that statement. Not only has the author managed to tell a story that covers all the facets of human endeavor, he has very much birthed his own world. A world full of wonder, beauty and darkness, all blended together so effortlessly. The author explores the human situation, exposing the very nature and disposition of man in relation to his predicament. The author explores man’s capacity for greed, love, temerity and cunning, while taking the reader on a  literally  multidimensional chase. It is a story of bravery, a story of friendship and loyalty against staggering odds. The author has put his own spin on the eternal battle between good and evil, using a very lovable protagonist as Nihu is wrongly accused and faces a world of treachery and evil. It is vital for a story to be able t...

BOOK REVIEW: Ogaba and the Enchanted Cave by Obande Sunny Jack

Ogaba and the enchanted cave Ogaba and the Enchanted Cave is a quite easy-to-read yet elegant prose targeted for pre-teens and early teenagers. The vocabulary is concise, adequate and fitting for that demographic. Perhaps what is more endearing about the text is its capacity to weave timeless human values into the narrative while placing premium on them. Values such as hardwork, cleanliness, politeness, cheerfulness, wisdom, and the like are rewarded when being practiced especially by children. For example, Ogaba’s cleanliness and wisdom fetches him liberty from the Ojujus. Worthy of note is the environmental consciousness of the writer who brings to the fore the geography, flora, and fauna typically obtainable in the middle belt of Nigeria such as the great Benue River, the Cattle and nomads, as well as the vegetation of the place. His love for plants, especially flowers comes out more vividly. The writer himself is not new to the craft of children’s literature. In fact, he ...

Book Review: My Walk on the Aikido Path: A Healing Journey of Self Discovery by Rachel Kling

Developing an identity is what defines who we are. “My Walk on the Aikido Path” by Rachel Kling is an enthralling journey of healing, self-discovery and complete understanding of herself. To bridge the gap between finding complete happiness and reaching the top, this book is the vehicle for aspiration, connection and compassion. The author made valid points about healing. Aikido as an art is authentic. Like most genuine practices, it brings satisfaction and cast out doubt. It teaches us that the quality of our lives is bound up with the quality of our relationships and that we exist in relation to others. I find this book interesting because it gives me an insight into how I should react to situations because our choices impart the entire human community. “Rather than fight, or try to harm the aggressor, nage creates an opportunity to choose connection over contention.” Aikido is all about relationships, connections, compassion, protection, peace, harmony and love. When w...

REVIEW ALERT: Literary Tic Tok of Animals.

I never thought of at this age reading a book where the animal, in this case cats, takes on real human feelings and emotions. In a way it is kind of funny. One point in reading this book, I could see the animals talking, drinking, and taking on real human attributes. This book is an anthology. The stories within these pages are well rounded. You can have a solid beginning, middle, and end in each one. Every story has some type of meaning or thought that the author is trying to get across. The story of Forgiveness took the spotlight for me. In this very short but to the point story gives a great example on how forgiveness should be granted and how all in the situation can walk away stronger and better than they came in. I am a big fan of short stories. These short stories are good quality stories with an antidote. This is the first time that I have ever encountered this. The illustrations in the book are very good also. There is a great companionship shown between the stories and i...

HARRY THE CHEEKY PRINCE: SHORT STORY FULL OF JOY

Harry the Cheeky  Prince is one heck of a story! Well written, fast paced and highly entertaining. I was engaged right from the first page. The writer’s colorful descriptions, choice of words and humor were captivating. “It was a town crier. His red robe and wide-brimmed hat gleamed in the sunlight as he gazed ahead; clearly enjoying the attention, he was getting from the crowd. He rang his bell once, twice, and let his voice go off again, even louder than before. ‘Oi...oi! The Princess of Wales has issued forth a son this 15th day of September, 1984. God save the Queen!’  He rang his bell once more and said again, ‘The Princess of Wales has issued forth a son this 15th day of September, 1984. GOD. SAVE. THE. QUEEN!’  Each word of his last line punctuated for emphasis. The crowd cheered and clapped, and suddenly the air seemed to wear the decorative colours of festivity. Hands bearing cameras stretched forward to capture the timeworn face of the t...
